MSIFN Liaison – Archaeological

Employment Type: Part-time ~8 to 24 hours per week, with the option to move to full-time as the position evolves. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.


Employer: Minogi – www.minogi.ca – MSIFN’s wholly owned business that supports MSIFN’s investments in clean energy projects and infrastructure, engages with external project teams to verify that project planning, construction and operations address commitments to MSIFN and regulatory requirements, and value MSIFN’s rich heritage, Treaty rights, environmental stewardship. Minogi reports to a Board of Directors appointed by MSIFN Chief and Council.

Location: Flexible, including remote. 

Salary: $22-$28/hour


Position Overview: Minogi is seeking an Archeological Liaison/Monitor to help protect, preserve, and ensure respect to the cultural heritage of MSIFN during ground-disturbing activities. This role is vital in safeguarding potential culturally significant sites and materials while ensuring respectful collaboration with proponents and contractors as well as compliance towards legal requirements. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of MSIFNs cultural values, traditions, and history coupled with archeological or environmental field experience, and a strong focus on work site health and safety.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultural Resource Protection: Monitor the construction, excavation, and other ground-disturbing activities to identify, document, and cultural or archaeological resources. While these activities are taking place, ensure the respectful treatment of cultural artifacts, remains, and heritage sites in alignment with the community protocols and traditions.
  • Collaboration and Advocacy: Serve as a liaison between MSIFN, project teams, and other external stakeholders to represent community interests and values. Work closely with Knowledge Keepers and obtain other significant cultural resources to develop and uphold traditional practices and heritage preservation goals.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and site records of monitoring activities. Complete daily logs and summary reports for leadership, ensuring any findings are documented with the proper care and respect.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the adherence to legal requirements that are laid out in contracts and agreements with proponents as well as other federal and provincial legislations such as the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) and the Ontario Heritage Act.
  • Education and Cultural Awareness: Promote cultural respect and awareness through effective collaboration, communication, and knowledge sharing with proponents and contractors where appropriate, to ensure the significance of cultural resources and protocols for working on the land. Participate in community outreach efforts related to heritage and cultural resource education.
  • Health and Safety: Prioritize your safety and the safety of others on work sites and traveling to and from work sites. Where required, always wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and boots, proper fall protection measures for working at heights. On-going participation in safety training and job site safety meetings, maintaining a clean and organized worksite, hazard communication, reporting unsafe conditions immediately to supervisors and job site supervisors, and reviewing and following emergency preparedness plans at worksites.
  • Related and Other Duties: 
  • Attend staff meetings and any other internal meetings to provide updates on the status of the work and specific projects
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as determined by the supervisors.


Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Archeology or Anthropology, Environmental Science or Studies, or a related field, or equivalent, including significant experience in working on and with the land for cultural purposes. 
  • Knowledge of culture, traditions, and history of MSIFN and/or other WTFNs. 
  • Great communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work respectfully with diverse groups. 
  • Strong ability to pay close attention to detail to ensure compliance with cultural and environmental protection rules, regulations, and laws. 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various environmental conditions. 
  • Experience with worker health and safety programs.
  • Ability to travel for site visits and fieldwork as required. 


Preferred Skills: 

  • Familiarity with documenting observations and writing reports. 
  • Exposure to cultural resource monitoring, archeology, or environmental field work. 
  • Membership or strong ties with MSIFN.
  • Experience working with Elders or Knowledge Keepers on cultural resource management projects. 
  • Experience with worker health and safety programs.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping tools or similar software.      


Vehicle and License: Applicants must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Mileage costs are paid at MSIFN’s approved mileage rates. Must also provide proof of $1M liability insurance.
