Ecology Project Coordinator

Position Overview: Minogi is seeking an Ecology Project Coordinator who will play a key role in technical review of proponent proposals and project activities within the Williams Treaties First Nations (WTFN) territory. They will provide recommendations on projects that help to mitigate impacts on the land, water, vegetation and wildlife. The Ecology Project Coordinator will help to ensure that environmental study methods are technically rigorous, adequately represent ecological ways of knowing, respect and uphold cultural values, and comply with environmental regulations, policies, and project-specific commitments. This role will involve occasional site inspections and studies, documenting environmental observations and conditions in collaboration with MSIFN Environmental Liaisons, and collaborating with proponents and contractors. The ideal candidate will have experience with environmental technical reports (e.g., Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, etc.), ecological survey methodologies, and experience conducting land and water-based surveys.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Review environmental studies to ensure technical rigour and compliance with environmental laws, permits, and agreements, including those related to Indigenous rights and cultural heritage. 
  • Identify potential gaps in expected impacts to the lands, waters, and wildlife. Recommend alternative mitigations that can be incorporated into proponent proposals and adaptive management.
  • In collaboration with the MSIFN Environmental Monitoring program, leadership, and members, incorporate and uphold Traditional Ecological Knowledge in analysis of environmental impacts, recommendation of mitigations, and review of monitoring results. 
  • Review field observations from MSIFN Environmental Liaisons and collaborate to create detailed reports and recommendations on required follow-up monitoring, mitigations, and adaptive management. 
  • Keep records of proponent responses to documented concerns, including in written responses and through proponent meetings.
  • Prepare budgets and project proposals, support with invoicing, and track project budgetary health.
  • Coordinate third party contractors as needed.
  • Participate in pre-construction surveys, mitigation planning, and post-project monitoring as required.
  • Engage in continuous learning about environmental survey methods, local ecosystems, and stewardship practices. 

Related and Other Duties: 

  • Attend staff meetings and any other internal meetings to provide updates on the status of the work and specific projects
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications: 

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Environmental Science or Studies, Ecology, Environmental Science or Studies, or a related field, or significant experience working on and with the land for environmental research and reporting purposes. 
  • Knowledge of culture, traditions, and history of  MSIFN and/or other WTFNs, including familiarity with local ecosystems.
  • Strong ability to pay close attention to detail to ensure compliance with cultural and environmental protection rules, regulations, and laws. 
  • Ability to document observations, write clear reports, and effectively communicate findings. 
  • Experience coordinating and/or managing projects, which includes ensuring alignment with budgets and timelines.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work respectfully with diverse groups. 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various environmental conditions. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel for site visits and fieldwork as required. 


Vehicle and License: Applicants must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Rental vehicles may also be arranged in certain circumstances. Mileage costs are paid at MSIFN’s approved mileage rates.

Position Overview: Minogi is seeking an Archeological Liaison/Monitor to help protect, preserve, and ensure respect to the cultural heritage of MSIFN during ground-disturbing activities. This role is vital in safeguarding potential culturally significant sites and materials while ensuring respectful collaboration with proponents and contractors as well as compliance towards legal requirements. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of MSIFNs cultural values, traditions, and history coupled with archeological or environmental field experience, and a strong focus on work site health and safety.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Cultural Resource Protection: Monitor the construction, excavation, and other ground-disturbing activities to identify, document, and cultural or archaeological resources. While these activities are taking place, ensure the respectful treatment of cultural artifacts, remains, and heritage sites in alignment with the community protocols and traditions. 
  • Collaboration and Advocacy: Serve as a liaison between MSIFN, project teams, and other external stakeholders to represent community interests and values. Work closely with Knowledge Keepers and obtain other significant cultural resources to develop and uphold traditional practices and heritage preservation goals. 
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and site records of monitoring activities. Complete daily logs and summary reports for leadership, ensuring any findings are documented with the proper care and respect. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the adherence to legal requirements that are laid out in contracts and agreements with proponents as well as other federal and provincial legislations such as the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) and the Ontario Heritage Act. 
  • Education and Cultural Awareness: Promote cultural respect and awareness through effective collaboration, communication, and knowledge sharing with proponents and contractors where appropriate, to ensure the significance of cultural resources and protocols for working on the land. Participate in community outreach efforts related to heritage and cultural resource education. 
  • Health and Safety: Prioritize your safety and the safety of others on work sites and traveling to and from work sites. Position Overview: Minogi is seeking a dedicated and culturally sensitive MSIFN Liaison with a focus on representing MSIFN perspectives and inputs to advance MSIFN art, design and culture to outside parties. The successful candidate will work closely with MSIFN artists and cultural workers to connect with other Mississauga Nation Indigenous artists, cultural organizations, project proponents and stakeholders to promote and preserve Indigenous art while ensuring that artists' voices and stories are authentically represented within the Treaty and Traditional Territory of Williams Treaties First Nations. This role requires a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and the unique challenges faced by Indigenous artists in the art, architecture, design and cultural worlds. The MSIFN Arts and Culture Liaison will facilitate the ethical promotion of MSIFN’s rich artistic, design and cultural experience and expertise, ensuring that all interactions respect cultural protocols and honor the integrity of the art. The Liaison will have a strong focus on work site health and safety.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultural Representation: Serve as a bridge between MSIFN and other Mississauga Nation Indigenous artists and cultural workers, and the broader community, ensuring that cultural practices and stories are respected and accurately represented in all exhibitions, displays, and promotional activities.
  • Artist Support and Advocacy: Advocate for MSIFN and other Mississauga Nation Indigenous artists and cultural workers, while safeguarding their cultural and intellectual property and ensuring that their rights and perspectives are respected when working with and reviewing potential collaboration with proponents.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with artists and cultural workers within MSIFN to build strong relationships, ensuring that art initiatives align with community values and benefit Indigenous artists. 
  • Contract and Oversight: Review and manage proposed contracts and projects with a focus on protecting the rights of MSIFN and other Mississauga Nation Indigenous artists, ensuring fair representation, royalties, and cultural protections. Along with proposed contracts, actively seek arts and culture opportunities within the WTFN territory to develop new opportunities and contracts. 
  • Project Planning and Design Inputs: Visit project sites and proposed construction sites managed by company and government project planners, designers and engineers to assess and provide creative inputs that may include Indigenous design, public art, architecture and cultural sensitivity.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate on the creation of culturally sensitive marketing strategies that promote Indigenous art without appropriation, ensuring that artists' stories are at the forefront of all promotional activities.
  • Health and Safety: Prioritize your safety and the safety of others on work sites and traveling to and from work sites. Where required, always wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and boots, proper fall protection measures for working at heights.   • Experience working with Indigenous artists, cultural workers, cultural institutions, or within the Indigenous art market.
  • Knowledge of MSIFN and Mississauga Nation Indigenous cultures, art traditions, and the contemporary Indigenous art landscape.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities in a respectful and ethical manner.
  • Understanding of cultural protocols and intellectual property rights as they pertain to Indigenous art.
  • Great communication skills, with the ability to navigate both creative and business aspects of the art world.
  • Ability to travel for site visits and community engagement as required.
  • Experience with worker health and safety programs.
  • Proficiency in office software, databases, and social media platforms.
